Disco and reggae tunes will kick off the last Wing Ding of the millennium in downtown Hollywood.
The two-day event will be taking place inside Young Circle Park, on Federal Highway and Hollywood Boulevard. Inner Circle and KC and the Sunshine Band will play on Saturday.
A concert featuring 98 Degrees, LFO, Meredith Brooks, Michael Fredo and several other acts on Sunday is sold out.
Organizers have been very pleased with the public’s response.
“This has got to be our most popular Wing Ding in a long time,” said Camie Dunbar, marketing director “Y-100” (WYHI, 100.7 FM). “The reaction has been tremendous.”
The last time the station got this kind of demand for tickets was two years ago, when the rock group Hanson performed, she said.
This is the 13th year that Y-100 has sponsored the fund-raiser. Proceeds will go to Here’s Help, a private, nonprofit drug rehabilitation center in Miami.
The station’s on-air morning personality, Footy, is also program director at Here’s Help. The facility has a daily caseload of 350 people, who receive residential and outpatient care.
When Footy started the event, it was originally a competition to see which restaurant made the best chicken wings. Since then, it has grown to include other activities such as auctions and live music.
To date, previous Wing Dings have managed to raise a combined total of more than $1 million for Here’s Help, Footy said.
“It’s gotten monstrously large,” he said. “It’s unbelievable what we have achieved. Now we’re going to have the final Wing Ding of the millennium. It will be the biggest ever.”
Saturday’s festivities will run 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $7 in advance or $10 at the gate. Kids 12 and younger can enter at no charge, if accompanied by an adult.
In addition to the concerts by KC and Inner Circle, there will be a live auction of sports memorabilia, vacation getaways and various paraphernalia autographed by such celebrities as Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Ricky Martin.
Local sports stars such as Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, kicker Olindo Mare and defensive end Jason Taylor, Miami Heat Coach Pat Riley and team center Alonzo Mourning will be assisting with the auction.
There will also be Wing Ding merchandise and wings for sale, drawings for backstage passes to Sunday’s show, a children’s play area, wresting exhibitions, a contest where spectators can test the most painful wing sauces on their palates and the wing competition.
About 20 restaurants are expected to vie for the title of best wings in the world. Among the contestants will be last year’s champs, R.J.’s Subs and Wings at 1851 N. Federal Highway in Hollywood.
The restaurant has won the grand prize in 1994, 1995 and 1998. Their secret weapon is a special sauce called the Chiks at Six, named after the radio station’s morning crew, said Coz Nicosia, manager at R.J.’s.
Chances look very good that the eatery will win again. Employees also expect to sell about 20 cases of cooked wings at their booth topped with sauces that range from mild to extremely hot, he said.
“We love doing this,” Nicosia said. “It helps a good cause, too.”
