Name that steer!

That?s the challenge Todd Herbst, co-owner of Grease Burger Bar in West Palm Beach, is putting out to Facebook users. The steer is a 200-pound replica that greets customers above the doorway to his Clematis Street restaurant.

First some background.

When Herbst was thinking about Burger Bar’s design, he found inspiration in New York City?s Meatpacking District. So if the Edison-style light bulbs and two-by-four steel beams remind you of a meat packing plant, the effect is intentional.

About six weeks ago, Herbst was back in New York and saw the oversized replica of a steer outside Old Homestead Steakhouse, said to be the city’s oldest purveyor of beef.

Inspired, Herbst came home to Florida and starting looking for a steer of his own. He found it online. Made in the Philippines, the fiberglass composite steer is 10-feet long and 5 feet wide from horn tip to horn tip.

?A few weeks later, one of the manager suggested naming it,? says Herbst. ?Right away, we came up with some names. But then we thought maybe we could make this a little more interesting.?

Herbst and his colleagues are collecting suggestions via Facebook and will announce a winner July 4 after the Fourth on Flagler fireworks. The steer will be outfitted with a beauty queen-style sash printed with the winning name. Winner receives $250 and one free burger per week for a year. The second place winner receives a $100 Grease credit and third place gets $50 to spend at the restaurant. You have until July 1 to enter a name.

Early name suggestions include Heff, Buck, Chuck and Dinner. Facebook users should search for the Grease Burger Bar page and post their suggestions on the wall or send a message. If you don?t have a Facebook account, fill out a comment card at the restaurant.

Grease Burger Bar is located at 213 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, 561-651-1075. The $8.95 classic cheeseburger has become a house favorite. Made with ground strip steak and filet, Herbst says it?s better than Hollywood?s Le Tub burger, a favorite of Oprah Winfrey and GQ magazine.

Herbst’s Big Time Restaurant Group also owns such South Florida restaurants as City Cellar, City Oyster and Rocco’s Tacos.
