The sun came up this morning, but I still feel a bit unsettled after watching the Burrowing Birds Get Buried In The Burrow.

I would like to say they just played badly, but I don’t think that is giving FIU enough credit. Galindo is a really nice player (19 points, 11 rebounds), and those two big white guys (7-0 Hicks and 6-11 Gacesa) handled Monroe easily, making him work hard for his 15 points and 7 rebounds, while they each scored 16.

I have an alternative theory on what happened, and that is there were Too Many Freakin’ Red Shirts in the place. The color karma gods put up with the first two, but couldn’t stomach the last one. I mean, FAU missed nine of their first 10 shots. That was a sign.

Even before halftime some of the Sexy’s abandoned the red, but it was too late. They got co-opted by a misguided marketing ploy to cover their natural blue shirts, and look what happened? Yes, I put this on one the FAU marketing sports marketing department. What needs to be buried is Bury The Burrow In Red, and replace it with Bury The Burrow In Blue.

That is Bytor on the left, with baseball coach Kevin “I ain’t wearing no frigging red shirt” Cooney on the right.

WHAT IS GOING ON?

I can’t figure out the current version of the Burrowing Birds. This is the time of they year they should be peaking, but they are falling by the wayside. FIU won its third game and first on the road last night,

“Our team is beginning to play well at the right time of the year,” FIU coach Sergio Rouco said.

“We took a step back,” T-Rex said. Both coaches were correct.

I am not sure what FAU can do. They have their best players on the floor, but those players couldn’t compete with FIU. They allowed too many easy baskets, too many rebounds, and weren’t patient on offense, forcing some wild shots, and getting the ball shoved back in their face before they realized those big guys could jump.

It was really pretty ugly, and unfortunate and kind of rude, when you invite your biggest crowd of the season to your house and then play like crap.

T-Rex said it was great having the Rowdy’s, Sexy’s and Prowlers out in big numbers, but it was up to his team to energize and excite the crowd, and not the crowd’s role to energize his team.

Middle Tennessee comes to town Saturday. Not getting my hopes up over that one.

There is some good news: Baseball season starts Friday!!!!!

Later…
