He signed with Bundesliga club 1860 Munich in 2000, while here he played for the reserve team in Division III. After he was drafted by the New England Revolution in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft as second overall he went back to the United States. In his first season, he scored 23 goals making him one of the best players in the league.

He completed second in league MVP voting in 2002 and was titled MLS Best XI. Then both he and Carloz Ruiz were titled the top goalscorer of the league with 15 goals each in 2003. He won both MLS Golden Boot and Major League Soccer MVP Award making it his best season in 2005.
