As southwest Broward County grows, so does the need for more service businesses.

One of the latest companies to set up shop in the area is SERVPRO of Southwest Broward County. The office, which opened in October, specializes in emergency fire and water damage restoration for commercial establishments and private homes.

The franchise is owned by the husband and wife team of Alberto Bellorin and Martha Salas. The couple’s territory includes Pembroke Pines, Weston, Miramar, Miami Lakes, Hialeah and Kendall.

The company was founded in 1967. There are 930 franchises nationwide. SERVPRO of Southwest Broward is the fourth office to operate in South Florida. Others are in Hollywood, West Palm Beach and North Miami Beach, Bellorin said.

In addition to fire and water damage restoration, SERVPRO offers carpet and upholstery cleaning, dry cleaning of draperies and will apply stain and soil protectants, Bellorin said.

Bellorin and Salas, who live in Pembroke Pines, owned a financial service consulting firm before switching to SERVPRO. They think their franchise has tremendous potential.

“Our idea to get this office started was because of the growth in Pembroke Pines and Miramar,” Bellorin said.

Get fit at Sports Club

Sports Club of Broward opened its doors on Saturday. The long-awaited gym is the successor to the Bryan Nichols Personal Training and Fitness Center. Sports Club is in the same shopping center at the Cooper City Plaza, 9900 Griffin Road in Cooper City. Moving into the new site took one year of planning and construction, Nichols said.

Nichols, a certified personal trainer, established his self-named, 2,000-square-foot center at the Cooper City Plaza four years ago. He decided to expand and open the 15,000-square-foot Sports Club after hearing requests from many members for larger quarters.

The club sits inside a former drugstore. The interior now boasts bright, motivating colors and wall mirrors.

Longtime members and newcomers can work out on new, state-of-the-art weight training equipment such as treadmills, stairmasters, cycles and free weights.

Or they can take classes in aerobics, spinning, tai chi, yoga and kick boxing.

There are separate locker rooms with showers for men and women, free day care, a bar that serves smoothie drinks, massage room and children’s fitness programs for ages 6 months to 9 years.

Condo ready to rise

A new Mediterranean-style condominium is rising in downtown Hollywood.

The project is replacing a small apartment/motel that once stood at 2000 Taylor St. The building was demolished in mid-December.

Construction on the three-story condominium is scheduled to begin in March. The gated development will have 23 two-bedroom/two-bath units. Each unit will average 1,000 square feet. Prices will run from $80,000 to $90,000.

A sales office is scheduled to open on the site soon.

The condominium complex is being built by the Hollywood Development Corp. This is the second project that Oscar Delgado and his brother, Jose, have undertaken in the city.

Their first was the rehabilitation of the Seahorse Condominium on Hollywood beach.

The two men have also rehabilitated malls, strip centers and warehouse space in Miami-Dade County.
