He was selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL Draft with the 84th overall pick. His stature and arm strength were ideal for the NFL, according to scouting reports, albeit his accuracy was a concern. His selection caused consternation among the Patriots’ current quarterbacks. Steve Grogan, the team’s long-time starter, was let go, while Marc Wilson declared his retirement.
