Robert Von Obituary, Death Cause – It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of a beloved member of the UCCS community, CU Distinguished Professor and UCCS Professor Robert von Dassanowsky. Dr. von Dassanowsky, who had been a cherished part of our university since 1993, leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence, inspiration, and profound impact. Dr. von Dassanowsky’s contributions to our institution were truly exceptional. As a professor of German and Visual and Performing Arts, he left an indelible mark on the academic landscape of UCCS. He was not only a distinguished scholar but also the founding director of the film studies program at UCCS, a pioneering initiative that enriched the educational experiences of countless students.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. von Dassanowsky made substantial contributions to the field of Austrian film studies. His research on Austrian-Hungarian literature and his expertise on Austrofascism were equally remarkable. His passion and dedication to these areas of study resulted in a prolific publication record that includes three single-authored books, ten edited volumes, and more than 60 refereed articles. His work was not only recognized locally but also on the international stage, earning him awards such as Austria’s Order of Merit and the University of Colorado’s Thomas Jefferson Award. His designation as a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor, celebrated with him just earlier this year, attested to the profound impact of his academic work.

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Dr. von Dassanowsky was a mentor and guide to students at UCCS. He co-founded and served as the faculty advisor of the annual UCCS Student Short Film Festival, a platform that showcased the talents and creativity of our students. He also played a pivotal role in mentoring film students who received UCCS Student/Faculty Research, Creative Works, and Community Service Awards, as well as those bound for MFA graduate programs. The heartfelt testimonies from his students vividly illustrate the transformative influence he had on their lives, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and reach new heights.

As we mourn the loss of a distinguished educator, scholar, and mentor, we extend our support to the UCCS community. The Wellness Center is available to assist students who have been affected by this loss, and the CARE Team is here to provide support and guidance. For faculty and staff in need of support during this difficult time, the Real Help Hotline at (833) 533-CHAT (2428) is accessible, and additional resources are available on the university’s website. Dr. von Dassanowsky’s legacy will continue to inspire and educate generations to come. His dedication to his students, his passion for his areas of expertise, and his unwavering commitment to excellence in academia have left an enduring mark on UCCS.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this challenging time. Information on a memorial service to honor Dr. von Dassanowsky’s life and contributions will be forthcoming and will be added to the posted Communique article when available. We will gather to celebrate his life, his work, and the lasting impact he has had on our university and the world of academia.
