Most junior college coaches look to the take next step up the career ladder the minute they’re hired at a small school.
Not Scott Pospichal, who’s in his seventh season coaching the men’s basketball team at Palm Beach Community College.
“I always tell everybody I have the best job in South Florida,” Pospichal said. “We might not make the most money as a coaching staff, but there’s a lot to say if you win games and we’ve been real fortunate.”
The Panthers finished No. 1 in the state two years ago, were No. 2 last season and were ranked fourth in the latest poll released last week. With that kind of success, it’s unusual a coach at a community college would stick around.
“I’m waiting for [coach) Kevin Loughery to call me from the Heat,” Pospichal said. “They always ask me, ‘Aren’t you going to leave?'” Pospichal said. “I say I want to leave every October when the Heat comes [for training camp) and then when they leave I realize I’m here for another year.”
He handles transfers, those whose grades aren’t good enough for Division I coming out of high schools or those not physically ready for Division I.
He gets plenty of recommendations from coaches, all of whom seem to think they have the perfect fit for Pospichal’s team.
“If I’m going to take him, I’ve pretty much got to see him and I’ve got to make my decision,” Pospichal said. “I don’t take many words of coaches.”
So far he hasn’t had to.
