A school security guard in a fit of jealousy killed his estranged wife and injured her friend late Sunday when he saw the two chatting outside his mother-in-law’s home, police and relatives said.

Vernon D. Thomas, 28, is accused of shooting Shevella “Rena” Thomas in the head and Arthur Knight in the leg during a bloody attack about 11:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of Northwest 24th Court, according to Thomas’ arrest affidavit. Vernon Thomas turned himself in to police early Monday morning. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Knight and the woman were caught in a barrage of bullets when Thomas pulled up in a borrowed car and opened fire, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Thomas, a security guard at Tequesta Trace Middle School in Weston, had no previous arrest record.

“He was extremely jealous to where he would not allow her to be alone,” said Rena Thomas’ brother, Carl Freelove, 37. “She got frightened of him and she moved back in with mom.”

The couple, who were married on July 6, 1996, had been separated for six months, the Sheriff’s Office said. They had a 2-year-old daughter.

According to Freelove, Knight had escorted Rena Thomas, 23, home from an aunt’s home in Lauderhill because she was afraid of her husband, who had confronted her earlier that evening. Knight drove in his own car behind Thomas’ to make sure she got home safely, Freelove said.

The two were chatting outside when Vernon Thomas roared up in his car, shouted, “That’s my wife,” and began shooting, according to the arrest affidavit.

“He confronted [Knight), telling him that’s his wife,” Freelove said. “She was running and he was trying to shoot both of them. When he managed to shoot the other guy, he went after her.”

Rena Thomas made it to her parents’ front door before she was shot in the head, Coleman-Wright said. Knight was treated and released from Broward General Medical Center.

Vernon Thomas, an employee of Broward County schools since 1992, turned himself in at the Broward County Jail at 1 a.m. on Monday, Coleman-Wright said.

Rena Thomas worked in the School Board’s early childhood development department, according to school records.

“That was my only sister. She was loved by everybody,” Freelove said. “She didn’t have an enemy in the world.”
