Panera Bread will be making Pink Ribbon bagels and employees will be wearing pink at 22 franchise locations throughout Palm Beach and Broward counties Oct. 5 to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raise funds. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Thirteen stores in Palm Beach County, nine in Broward and six in Miami-Dade will participate.

This is the second time this year that Panera Bread and Covelli Enterprises, a Panera franchisee that runs 22 stores, has participated in Pink Ribbon Bagel Days.

Nicky Tesser, director of marketing and public relations for Covelli Enterprises, said area Panera stores sold 4,000 Pink Ribbon bagels at $1.25 apiece to help support the Race for the Cure event Jan. 29 in downtown West Palm Beach. Tesser said on race day, Panera provided 10,000 assorted bagels. This year, she said, the firm wanted to raise funds in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We’re doing a Go Pink bagel preorder form for a Bagel Pack and Go Pink bagel and three other options,” Tesser said.

Preorders for those options start today. The Bagel Pack, with 13 Pink Ribbon bagels, a choice of two of five cream cheeses and a Go Pink bag, is available for $20 while supplies last. Other options include 13 Pink Ribbon bagels for $11.99, a Bagel Pack of 13 Pink Ribbon bagels and two cream cheeses for $16.79 and a Bagel Bunch, which includes a dozen and a half Pink Ribbon bagels, for $15.79. Pink Ribbon bagels will also be available for individual sale at a cost of about $1.25. On Oct. 5, all Pink Ribbon bagel sales and bagel preorders will benefit Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure South Florida.

“The employees are jazzed about it,” said Janna Tincher, general manager of Panera Bread Cafe in Delray Beach. “They all participated last year and they get to wear pink shirts. It was huge the last time we did this. From open to close, everyone wanted to support this cause. We’re going to be busy, especially for a great cause.”

Panera Bread Cafe in Delray Beach is located at 1701 S. Federal Highway.

Nancy Cinci, a retired schoolteacher who taught at Pompano Beach Ely High School, has coffee at Panera Bread every day and applauds the store’s commitment to the Susan G. Komen cause.

“Any attention towards breast cancer awareness I think is a good thing,” she said. “Last year I bought a Pink Ribbon bagel, and this year I’ll be here that morning to do the same. I always remember this time of the year because when I taught at Ely High School, I had my students make a pink ribbon and they wore it on a breast cancer awareness day we hosted.”
