Ahmad Haston’s first year as the Palm Beach Central starter was limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Haston played in only a handful of games in 2020, so entering the 2021 season, he knew he still had a lot to prove.
“Coming into this season, it was big mystery because with the COVID season, I didn’t really know what I was capable of, what I could do and what I could accomplish,” Haston said.
The Broncos’ junior quarterback proved he was as capable as anyone in Palm Beach County. Haston led Palm Beach Central’s high-flying offense to an undefeated regular season and a trip to the Class 8A regional finals. He is the Sun Sentinel’s Palm Beach County Class 8A-6A offensive player of the year.
“I’m grateful for all the opportunities I had this year and I’m just glad now to know that I can perform at a high level,” Haston said.
Haston, who was a preseason Super 11 pick, got out to a quick start to the year. He threw 23 touchdowns with no interceptions and 1,683 passing yards through his first five games.
“When we were going through the beginning of the season, it was almost like I was playing a video game,” Haston said. “It was like I was a Madden character.”
The season got a little bumpier as it went on, and the Broncos pulled out some closer games. But Haston and Palm Beach Central won District 7-8A and clinched a spot in the postseason. In the playoffs, Haston had his toughest competition. He completed 52 percent of his passes for 555 yards and threw five touchdowns, along with his only two interceptions of the season. He also ran for 110 yards and a score in a first-round game against Fort Pierce Centennial.
Haston finished the season with 3,018 passing yards and completed 61 percent of his passes. He threw 30 touchdowns while also being mobile in the pocket.
Haston currently holds two college offers: one from Virginia and one from Marshall.
“I’m just going through the process,” Haston said. “It’s all new to me right now, so I’m just trying to figure it out.”
