The Nintendo Switch is infamous for its Joy-Con drift issues plaguing 40 per cent of the base consoles, as reported by UK consumer firm ‘Which?’. Nintendo is aware of the issue and has launched a new subscription programme to combat faulty consoles for only a marginal fee.
Aptly called ‘Wide Care’, the subscription programme allows Switch owners to pay a nominal annual fee for a warranty to cover their devices. In the event of a failure or a malfunction, owners subscribed to Wide Care may ship their Switches back to Nintendo and let them sort it out. This comprehensive coverage only costs about US$15 a year or US$1.50 per month.
While the new subscription sounds like good news for Switch owners, there is a catch, a huge one.
The biggest caveat of the Wide Care subscription as at the time of writing is that it is only accessible in Japan. As a result, if you live in the United States, Europe, or any other territory, you cannot enrol in Wide Care for the time being.
Still, the fact that Nintendo has launched such a programme suggests that it may be considering a broader worldwide deployment in the future.
