I teach in a school that has students from a very wide range of cultural backgrounds and economic status. A significant number of my students are ELLs or bilingual. They speak Spanish, Portuguese, and several other languages. Many are of meager financial means qualifies them for free and/or reduced lunch. Here at Rogers Park we have adopted the SIOP model which enables us to teach our content in a way that our non-English speaking students learn to speak the language of our class in English, thus acquiring the English language. I have used google to show students how to translate internet material, including our class content, into their original language. There are also a fairly large number of students with special needs. These students are integrated into our music classes and participate in all activities, classroom and performances. Our students create projects musical instruments and available computers.
