Florida coach Urban Meyer hid details of his Dec. 6 emergency hospital visit to protect his family and players, he said during Thursday’s Sugar Bowl teleconference.
A 911 call released Wednesday revealed Meyer was unresponsive on the floor of his Gainesville home while wife Shelley begged him to rise at around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 6. Florida originally stated Meyer was admitted to a Gainesville hospital for dehydration.
Meyer said UF was “very careful” and didn’t want the incident to alarm his team and family.
“You do what you’ve got to do to protect them,” Meyer said about his wife and three children. “If that means not coming clean with full details about something very personal, if you can’t understand that, first of all I think you have to recheck yourself.”
Meyer dodged numerous questions about his health, prompting a Sugar Bowl moderator to ask reporters to keep questions football-specific.
