The Jewish Center at Temple Sholom is hosting Kosher gourmet cooking classes. Classes will meet monthly.

“We have a perfect kosher kitchen to teach kosher cooking and more people are eating home with this economy and they want to learn how to make tasty and innovative kosher food,” said Melissa Mayersdorf, office manager at Temple Sholom.

Classes are $18 which includes instructions, supplies and food. Reservations are a must at least one week prior to each class.

The classes will take place on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. on Feb. 23, March 23 and April 27 at the temple located at 132 SE 11th Avenue in Pompano Beach.

The Jewish Federation of Broward County’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) will join the American Jewish Committee Greater Miami and Broward Chapter to present a program dealing with the need of the U.S. to become energy independent. The program, titled “Energy Independence – America’s Road to Freedom,” will take place Feb. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Katz Federation Building, 5890 South Pine Island Road, Davie.

“We need to be energy independent,” said Pepi Dunay, vice president of community relations for the Jewish Federation of Broward County. “It is critical for our country in terms of our national security, economic development and environment.”

Special guest speakers will include Paul Hirschson, consul political & economic affairs, State of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico; James F. Murley, director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, Fort Lauderdale, and a member of the State of Florida Energy and Climate Commission; Dr. George Philippidis, associate director of research development, Applied Research Center, Florida Atlantic University; and Lynn Roth, chair, American Jewish Committee Miami, Energy Security Task Force.

Na’amat USA, Medina Chapter in Pembroke Pines Century Village is hosting a bus trip on Feb.1.

“The event will include a luncheon at Ben’s Kosher Restaurant in Boca Raton and a show titled ‘The Richard Terry Revue’ at the Olympic Heights High School,” said Marjorie C. Moidel, S.E. area national coordinator Na’amat USA.

The event will benefit NA’AMAT day care centers, community centers, vocational and agricultural boarding schools, women’s legal services and domestic violence shelters in the state of Israel.

“Now, more than ever we need the help of the community,” Moidel said.” “I just received a letter from Na’amat USA and our kindergarten in Ashdod was damaged from the bombings in Israel. The children were not in school at the time, but the building will have to be repaired.”
