Jun Kunimura Career
Kunimura’s acting career began with a cameo in Shir Moritani’s 1973 catastrophe drama Tidal Wave. After appearing in the TV dramas Ayu no Uta and Yôi don, he landed his first starring role in Kazuyuki Izutsu’s Gaki Teikoku. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, he starred in several Hong Kong-produced films, including a significant cameo part as a Triad shooter in the film’s opening teahouse shootout in John Woo’s Hard Boiled. Black Rain, his debut American feature, was released in 1989.
The Yakuza action film, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Kunimura’s mentor Ysaku Matsuda, was shot on location in Kunimura’s hometown of Osaka. He is well-known for his collaborations with Western filmmakers such as Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, and Roland Emmerich. He has worked with several well-known Japanese filmmakers, including Takashi Miike, Lee Sang-il, Hideaki Anno, and Ryuhei Kitamura.
He received critical and popular acclaim for his performance in Na Hong-jin’s Korean horror film The Wailing in 2016. It earned him nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Popular Star at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards, making him the first non-Korean and Japanese actor to do so.
