Hue Ho Biography

Hue Ho is Binh Ho’s wife and the matriarch of HBO Max’s House of Ho. Hue is portrayed in the show as a devoted wife and a family matriarch. She is the perfect-looking, overly judgmental mother who believes her children can do no wrong. She frequently defends the children when Binh appears unreasonable, particularly in light of Washington’s hard-partying behavior.

Her passion for her family is only matched by her love of cooking, which is evident during the weekly Sunday dinner she hosts. The traditional Vietnamese cuisine is delicious, but the drama at the table is even better.

Binh had previously visited the United States in 1968 and 1971 to train in the air force. However, when the war broke out, he was unable to leave immediately since Binh needed to return to Hue. They were rescued by a ship three days later. Later, the ship transported them to Singapore and then to the Philippines, where they were housed in a refugee camp.

Finally, they were sponsored by the United States and arrived in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, where there were many Vietnamese refugees. They spent six months in Arkansas before being sponsored to Kerrville, Texas. After that, the married immigrant pair continued their journey to where they are now.

Hue and Binh had three children together: Judy, an attorney, and two sons, Washington and Reagan. Judy is the oldest at 42 years old, Washington is 41, and Reagan is 39.

Hue learned English from a lady teacher named Judy after moving to the United States, so she called her daughter after her. Her husband was named Washington after the first president and Ronald Reagan, was President when Reagan was born in 1983.

Furthermore, the show never wholly situates the Hos in the context of Houston’s larger Vietnamese community, which is concentrated in neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Alief. Much of the filming was done in 2019 before Vietnamese Americans earned global notoriety in 2020 for their resistance to the Black Lives Matter movement and disproportionate support for Donald Trump. As a result, it avoids discussing more challenging topics such as class, racism, and politics.

Given the societal restraints associated with riches, Asian conceptions of guilt and shame, and centuries-old Confucian patriarchal standards, it is unsurprising that the Ho children struggle with happiness. Binh and Hue are taken aback when they find Judy has a new boyfriend, and they even ask her to apologize to her husband despite being dissatisfied with her marriage.

Hue, the show’s matriarch, who rarely displayed emotion, suddenly communicated her concern about the divorce by speaking in Vietnamese, a language she feels more at peace. They also blame their daughter for her marriage’s demise.

In an interview with Salon, her daughter Judy said that her parents were reportedly ambushed into making the series, which they initially assumed was about the American dream: given their obsession with reputation and image.
