As Google Chrome grows, it's been adding even more useful features and advanced settings to play with. Google sometimes tests new features before deploying them into the stable browser version, and the newest version recently introduced a great new way for you to take control of annoying webpages.
You already know that Chrome displays a speaker icon on tabs that are playing audio, which is great for identifying rogue sounds when you have too many tabs open. With this new feature, you can go ahead and mute those tabs with a single click.
All you have to do is right-click and choose Mute Tab. You'll see a small line over the speaker, letting you know the audio has been muted.
Or, to make it even more convenient, you can type chrome://flags in the address bar, search for "tab audio", then enable the Tab Audio Muting UI Control option. Restart Chrome and now you'll be able to mute tabs just by clicking on the speaker icons.
Now when sites load annoying auto-playing videos -- or when you visit a horrible website that still plays background music -- you have a weapon you can use against them.
Bear in mind that this feature is not yet officially supported and may be removed at any time.
