Atwell, who was born and raised in London, studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and had her stage debut in a production of Prometheus Bound in 2005. She later featured in several West End and television shows and was recognized for her breakout role as Lady Elizabeth Foster in The Duchess (2008), for which she received a British Independent Film Award nomination. In 2005, Atwell debuted professionally in London’s Sound Theatre’s Prometheus Bound, where she portrayed the Zeus-exiled virgin Io. According to the British Theatre Guide, Atwell “makes us respond to the anguish without for a moment inviting a chuckle at her bandaged hands.” The following year, she appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company as the protagonist’s wife, Bianca, in Women Beware Women. She played Carter in two episodes of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as the primary role of Agent Carter, which aired from 2015 to 2016.
