Gene Matthews Obituary, Death Cause – Gene Matthews, a beloved character in North Port for many years and a Republican who served on numerous municipal boards and commissions in addition to the Sarasota County Commission and the Sarasota County School Board, passed away not too long ago. Matthews was a member of both the Sarasota County Commission and the Sarasota County School Board. He was known informally as “Mr. North Port” as a result of the long-term advocacy he offered for the city that he had adopted and the significant impact he had on it. This was due to the fact that he had adopted the city.
Gene attended every meeting of the North Port Republican Club for his entire life. In addition, the North Port Chamber of Commerce named him the “First Business Advocate of the Year,” the “Citizen of the Year,” and the “Business Man of the Year” in 1992 in North Port. He was also named the “Business Man of the Year” in North Port. Gene was honored by being given the title of namesake for the Boys & Girls Club that was located in North Port in the year 1997.
Gene has given his time as a volunteer to a number of organizations over the course of his life, including the North Port Volunteer Fire Department, the North Port Kiwanis Club, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, the board of directors for the West Villages Improvement District, and the North Port Little League. In addition to that, he has served on the boards of directors for the West Villages Improvement District, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the North Port Kiwanis Club.
