Rafael “Felo” Ramirez, the Miami Marlins’ beloved Spanish-language radio broadcaster, was hospitalized Thursday after falling while getting off the team bus Wednesday night.
Ramirez, 93, was in stable condition, a team spokesman said. He suffered several lacerations and was not scheduled to return to Miami with the Marlins after their series finale with the Phillies on Thursday afternoon.
Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, Ramirez has called Marlins games since the club’s first season in 1993. When Marlins Park was built, the team and city named part of N.W. 6th Street outside the ballpark “Felo Ramirez Drive.”
Ramirez has been a staple of baseball in Latin America, including his native Cuba, for decades and in 1980 was honored by then-MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn for his work promoting baseball there. Among the games Ramirez has called: Hank Aaron’s’ 715th home run, Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th hit and Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
The Marlins are scheduled to give out a Felo Ramirez bobblehead to the first 5,000 fans at their game May 28 at Marlins Park.
