A driver struck and killed an 84-year old man in a Wawa parking lot in Deerfield Beach early Tuesday morning, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 4 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian at 20 SW 12th Ave. in Deerfield Beach, according to Carey Codd, a spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Bryan Handy, 42, had driven into the parking lot in a Ford pickup truck and headed towards one of the fuel pumps when he hit Juan Fuentes, 84, as he was walking through the parking lot near the pumps.
Deputies “immediately began life-saving measures” on Fuentes. Broward Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Handy remained at the scene, Codd said.
Detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit are continuing to investigate, but have determined that neither excessive speed nor impairment contributed to the crash.
