A man was seriously hurt Monday after he crashed his motorcycle in Pompano Beach.

The man was driving south in the 1500 block of North Federal Highway around 4 p.m. when he “hit a curb and went tumbling,” said Batttalion Chief Randy DeVore with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue.

Witnesses told officials the man tried to pass a car on the right and hit the curb, DeVore said. He was not wearing a helmet.

When rescue crews arrived, the man was unconscious and had head injuries, DeVore said. He was taken to Broward Health North as a trauma alert. No other injuries were reported.

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives were investigating the crash Monday evening.

“Witnesses told investigators not only was the motorcyclist speeding at the time of the crash, there were no other vehicles anywhere around him when he did crash,” spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.

The man lost control of the Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle and was ejected into a swale, Moschella said. The motorcycle continued skidding down the road for about 170 feet.

Authorities did not release the name of the motorcyclist, who remained in critical condition Monday night.

The southbound lanes on North Federal Highway from the 1800 block to the 1000 block were closed for about two hours as detectives investigated, Moschella said.
