Darius started his career as a professional basketball player after he was drafted third overall during the 2000 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. In 2001 after playing for two seasons, He was named to NBA All-Rookie Team.
Two years later, Darius alongside Harold Jamison was traded for Andre Miller and Bryant Stith of the Cleveland Cavaliers. There, Darius stayed for one and a half-season and was again traded for Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Jeff McInnis of the Portland Trail Blazers in the mid of the 2003–04 season.
During the 2004–05 season, He made headlines after he confronted Maurice Cheeks who was by then the head coach. In the confrontation, Darius remarked that Cheeks did not care if the team lost the next 20 games since he was going to be fired
