Since February 1984, Dan has been a weekday sports anchor for WGN Evening News at Five and Six, as well as WGN News at Nine. On Sundays at 9:40 p.m., he hosts Instant Replay, WGN’s expanded look at weekend sports.
He began his career in 1977 at WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois, where he worked as a sports director for seven years. At WGN, he has worn many hats. He has hosted and co-produced pregame and halftime shows for WGN’s NBA and MLB broadcasts. He also fills in as a play-by-play announcer for WGN’s Bulls, Cubs, and White Sox games.
He was also the lead announcer for the station’s DePaul University basketball telecasts. He also did play-by-play for Notre Dame football broadcasts on the station in 1988, when the Fighting Irish won a national championship. In addition to hosting between-periods segments during hockey telecasts, he has added the Chicago Blackhawks to WGN’s programming schedule.
During his time at WGN, he was well-known, having won numerous Emmy Awards for his work as a host, producer, reporter, and play-by-play announcer. In 1994, Dan won three Emmy Awards for sports programming.
