It didn’t take long for wrestlers from Broward and Palm Beach counties to make a splash Saturday night in the State High School Championships at the Lakeland Civic Center.

Less than 30 minutes into the finals, John Moran of Coral Springs, Jeff Dowling of Santaluces and Jerry Seymore of Glades Central had given area schools a state title in every classification.

Moran won the 4A title at 119 pounds, Dowling won in 5A at 112, and Seymore won the 3A championship at 130.

Moran, a senior, capped a perfect (32-0) season by rallying to win an 8-6 overtime decision against Charlotte’s August Dennis.

“I feel like I’m floating right now; I’ll never forget this moment,” said Moran, the second state champion in his school’s history (Jerry Durkis won titles in 1980 and ’82).

Trailing 4-0 after two periods, Moran rallied for a tie before winning with a single-leg takedown in overtime.

“He’s 3-0 in overtime matches this year,” said Colts coach Dan Jacob. “I think that says something about his character. He just never quits.”

Said Moran: “That kid was intense. But once it went into overtime, I knew I had it. That’s why I’ve put myself through so much, for that mental edge.”Moran said he was motivated after teammates Mike Rakes, at 112, and Shawn Hamilton, at 140, lost in the semifinals but fought through the wrestlebacks to win consolation finals for third place.

Rakes finished with a 30-2 record, while Hamilton was 21-1. This despite the fact Hamilton had his left leg crushed when struck by a drunk driver in March, and wrestled with a steel rod in his shin upon returning in January.

Dowling (33-3) defeated Jose Tovar of Coral Park to become the first state champion ever at Santaluces.

Seymore beat Bishop Moore’s Carlos Arias 5-2 to become the third from his family to win state titles, along with his brother, Eric, and an uncle.

John I. Leonard’s Albert Serna (34-2), who came in unbeaten, had to settle for fourth in 5A at 125.

Taravella 220-pounder Mike Powers (29-1) battled the flu and still had an outstanding tournament, knocking off previously unbeaten Derek Busciglio of Plant City in the semifinals before falling 21-6 to repeat state champion Brian Black of Oviedo in the 5A final.

Ken Manfredi of Douglas (32-1) also marched through the tournament with an unblemished record before dropping a 6-2 decision to John Severe of North Miami in the 5A final.
