Soap notes
General Hospital’s head writer, Bob Guza, has checked out. Guza, winner of multiple daytime writing awards, was the genius behind GH’s high ratings.
Guza has had to handle a show on which myriad actors have insisted on marathon vacations — including Tony Geary (Luke), Genie Francis (Laura) and Kristian Wagner (Felicia). Some of his top creations have opted to leave GH, and Guza has had to bring in new characters to continue the show’s top ratings.
The recipient of lavish praise from his actors, Guza has not yet decided on his next gig. Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Steven Burton (Jason) both trusted Guza to give them great storys and words. The set has been gloomy since the word that Guza is going — and it got gloomier still when word spread that Meg Bennett of his writing staff is also leaving.
J. Eddie Peck (Jake, AMC) is a firm believer in three’s company. “It seems every character I have played on daytime has been in a love triangle,” he says. His last daytime stay as Cole on The Young and the Restless had him torn between a mother (Nikki) and a daughter (Victoria, who also may have been his half-sister).
“That was a great story line,” he says. “I am looking for things to be as hot on AMC.”
When Michael Lowry decided to exit AMC, a wide net was cast for the character of Jake. Peck , who is a California boy — he shares a ranch home with wife, Sharon, and two sons — was AMC’s final answer.
From the day Peck came on the AMC set, he was surrounded by action. He was getting shot at while trying to aid Chechen war victims. “I like that my character is in the thick of things,” says Peck. “In the first week, I was shot and had to deal with accepting help from Ryan — a man who is in love with Gillian, the woman I love.”
Peck says he thinks a big challenge will be trying to win Gillian from Ryan: “I am very aware that Cameron Mathison [Ryan] is the show’s heartthrob.”
