While there’s talk of adding condos, hotels and office space to Las Olas Riverfront, it’s business as usual on both sides of the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

As of last month, the venerable Downtowner Saloon (408 S. Andrews Ave., 954-463-9800) has new owners. Frankie Labriola and Brad Noonan insist they have no plans to change 30 years of tradition. “The Downtowner is an institution,” says Labriola, who also owns a restaurant in Misquamicut, R.I. “The traditions that guests built will remain.”

Across the river, Mike and Aileen Brennan have opened Briny Riverfront Irish Bar & Restaurant (305 S. Andrews Ave., 954-376-4742) in the ground level of a parking garage, where a 19-foot great white shark greets guests. The Brennans also own Briny Irish Pub in Pompano Beach and Dicey Riley’s in Fort Lauderdale.

POP CULTURE ON DISPLAY

The California Raisins, a pop culture phenom birthed in the 1980s, are in Fort Lauderdale for a monthlong exhibition at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale (1799 SE 17th St., 954-525-5190). The original sculptures, by Will Vinton, are included in Vinton’s Animation Art Collection “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” exhibit. It was Vinton, creator of the characters Noid and M&M;’s Red and Yellow, who coined the term claymation. Showcased along with his own work (which has earned him an Oscar, Emmy and Clio), are animation cells, drawings, and sculptures the artist has collected. Opening reception is 5 to 7 tonight.
