He began his professional football career in 2006 when the Dallas Cowboys selected him eighth overall in the NFL Draft. Later, it was claimed that coach Bill Parcells chose him because of his past coaching expertise with his father, Rob Carpenter.
His greatest performance came against the Seattle Seahawks when he had five tackles and three pass deflections. After largely playing on special teams, he took over as the team’s nickel linebacker in 2009. During his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys, he recorded 96 tackles and 29 special teams tackles. On May 10, 2010, Bobby was traded to the St. Louis Rams for Alex Barron.
Despite signing with the St. Louis Rams on May 10, 2010, he was released on September 4, 2010, before the season began. He later signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins on September 6, 2010, reuniting with Bill Parcells. He was waived on October 18, 2010, for blocking assignments against the Green Bay Packers.
Bobby signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions on October 20, 2010. Bobby recorded six tackles, a pass deflected, and made the play of the game, returning an interception for a score, sparking a second-half come-from-behind victory against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, a year later.
