Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This project will support my 9th grade students taking AP Human Geography in our school's inaugural year offering the course. These students will be experiencing their first AP course, with all of the energy and inexperience of 9th grade students.

Most of our students will be first-gen college students and many are first generation Americans as well.

One of the reasons we will begin offering this course in 9th grade is to set students on a trajectory toward other advanced coursework to prepare them well for college and beyond.

My Project

Students will put principles of sustainable urban planning in action as they design and build their own city with teammates as a summative project.

Students will make decisions about spatial relationships, sustainability, zoning, greenbelts, housing, and other land use issues as they build their cities.

They'll then explain their choices in writing, leveraging the vocabulary and concepts they've learned in the course.

To do this, I'd like students in the smallest groups possible- ideally three students. To equip the project, I'll need about 30,000 Lego-compatible blocks, and lots of compatible foliage and accessories, and enough baseplates for about 15 groups.
